Much of England’s World Cup bid has been mired in controversy in recent times, with one British newspaper in May exposing an outrageous accusation by former FA Chief Lord Triesman. His claim that Spain and Russia were exchanging favours – Russia to lend sympathetic referees for Spain’s World Cup campaign on the basis that Spain vote for their 2018 bid – had English representatives grovelling for forgiveness at every turn. Yet three months is a long time in the politics of football, especially so when a new Premier League season is well underway.

As soon as FIFA representatives stepped off the plane at Heathrow Airport the red carpet was rolled out, with visits to six high-profile stadiums involved in the bid and a tour around Old Trafford with Manchester United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton. Such endorsement from sporting celebrities is only adding to the stature that a World Cup in England could hold, with David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and even Paul the Psychic Octopus throwing their weight behind the effort.
