Apple Loops are specially-formatted audio files containing data that enables them to conform automatically to the tempo and pitch of any project. This is incredibly useful, as not only do they function as building blocks allowing non-musicians to put together coherent pieces of music quickly and easily, but you can also build up a library of riffs and beats from other sources that can be used in any project, whatever the key and tempo. GarageBand ships with a built-in library of over 1000 Apple Loops, but it also contains a little-known feature that makes it easy to build and expand your personal sound library by transforming your own licks and grooves into Apple Loops. Here’s how it’s done.

Find your Sound

To begin, you’ll need to have come up with a part that you want to convert into an Apple Loop. You can do this either by recording in a MIDI sequence on a software instrument track, recording your own audio performance, or importing an audio file from the Media browser onto an audio track.

Select Part

Remember that any processing or effects that you’ve applied to the part, such as compression or reverb, will also be rendered as part of the conversion process. Once you have a part that fits the bill, click to highlight the region you want to convert.
