When many Americans think of Africa they picture a land of jungles, barbarians, and mysteries. They think of devastation and poverty. Rarely do they think of Africa as anything civilized or modern. Where did these ideas of Africa form? I believe that many of our views of Africa come from the legend that we know as Tarzan. Tarzan films, especially, have been very influential to American culture.

Africa according to Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote the legend of Tarzan in 1914. He was born on September 1, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois. It could be his lack of knowledge of Africa that created all of these myths of Africa.

In Tarzan of the Apes the wilderness is portrayed as an unhindered power and the Africans are portrayed as low, meandering animalistic people. For example, Edgar Rice Burroughs says in the first book about Tarzan:

“Many travelers have seen the drums of the great apes, and some have heard the sounds of their beating and the noise of the wild, weird revelry of these first lords of the jungle, but Tarzan, ... the only human being who ever joined in the fierce, mad, intoxicating revel of the Dum-Dum.”

Tarzan, the character, is the child of two English aristocrats that travel to Africa in the hopes of becoming Colonists. An ape kills his parents shortly after Tarzan is born. Great Apes, not gorillas, then raise him. Tarzan replaces the baby that Kala, one of the Great Apes has lost.

The beginning of Tarzan the movie

Shortly after the book Tarzan of the Apes was created, movie producers showed interest in creating a film. The filmmakers wanted strived for the first movie to be a realistic portrayal of the jungle so they filmed the movie in Morgan City, Louisiana. Which seems appropriate considering Tarzan was created by an American who seemed know very little of true African culture.

The actors who played Tarzan were very influential in America. Elmo Lincoln was Tarzan in the first two Tarzan movies. For The Return of Tarzan they decided to cast an inexperienced fireman named Joseph C. Pohler (also known as Gene Pollar). Lincoln was automatically a tough act to follow since he defined Tarzan in the eyes of moviegoers.
